pitcherlady June 03, 2008 Community Garden « Previous Main Next » ![]() Something New East Nashville Cooperative Ministry on Main St., created this space (above) to supplement their emergency food box program with fresh vegetables. Like a lot of other agencies, their supply doesn't meet their demand these days and a couple of times, they've even run out of food. For the past couple of months (and in the months to come) I've been commissioned, I guess you could say, to help Second Harvest Food Bank spread the word about hunger in the United States and particularly, throughout middle Tennessee. To do that will require a moderate amount of travel (they distribute food in forty-six counties). Already, it's been a great experience just talking to everyone about whatever predicament drove them to either volunteer or receive help. The stories are challenging and occasionally in-your-face but definitely worth listening to. Regular readers have already had a little preview but I've copied those subjects onto their own page. I agree that the Food for Thought title is a little clichè (it wasn't my favorite and you'd never find it in a Google search for sifting through the recipes) but after obsessing over it for more than a month, it seemed to be the only workable option. It's still young though, so I'm taking suggestions via e-mail. Just doing a spontaneous survey here, but does everyone know that there are people who are allotted ten dollars worth of food stamps a month? In some cultures, that translates to two cups of Starbuck's coffee. Naturally, (on this new page) we'll be riding along to the grocery store any day now, with someone who has the luxury of shopping with ten dollars. Until then, go on over and have a look around and if you happen think of the grand solution, please give us a shout. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, give us a shout no matter what. (LINK) p.s. I'll still be posting here with (probably) the same irregularity. If anyone has any tomato cages lying around, I'm sure the East Nashville Cooperative Ministry could put them to good use. Aluminum pans and trellis netting (for the beans to run on) would also be a great help. permalink Comment Gallery: On The Street |
