Slow and steady

turtle

« Previous   Main  Next »

Yesterday, I let the last turtle go free. We said goodbye and I opened up one side of the turtle condo (don't ask) and he wandered off into the flower bed there with the others. I don't know how many survived. They went missing one at a time and I assume (since they were so little) they're in the same flower bed doing whatever turtles do. Slug patrol probably. We love that. He came back for a short visit this afternoon so maybe it isn't the end of the turtle story. We'll see.

UPDATE: I meant to mention a a couple of other things about the turtles, people have asked me what they eat. The answer to that they're omnivorous. Crickets, slugs, earthworms, strawberries, bananas, tomatoes, baby birds that fall to the ground. No carrots. As Mark mentioned in the comments, they like canned dog food too (no cat food though – something in cat food interferes with their growth)

The other thing about the box turtles, I recently learned, is that they're twelve million years old. Twelve million years. So basically what that means is that when turtles look right at you and it seems like they get it, it may be because they do.

You know, once their shells started to have color, I couldn't tell which was which unless they were all together. Unfortunately, I didn't do a group shot. Also, they doubled in size in two months; now they're about the size of a silver dollar.

If you put out some canned dog food and start a water sprinkler, they'll come out to eat. My aunt left fond memories for many children with this activity.

That's a great idea. They seem to get pretty excited about bananas as well.
